March 8, 2014

Burglary is commonly known as breaking and entering another person’s house with the sole purpose of committing a felony or a crime during a particular period of time of day. According to the definition, breaking and entering is just the first part of the offence as it often leads to more serious crimes. Home burglary is an increasing issue in recent years and it is no wonder many homeowners are looking into investing their money into buying safes, surveillance systems and Steel doors.

Theft is usually the most common reason why a person would burglarise, because burglars majorly target Valuable Assets. Asides theft, Sexual assault is another crime associated with burglary. Females are common victims of this atrocious act but there are also a handful of reported cases of male attacks.

Burglary is usually executed in the drape of darkness this is why the nighttime is the preferred hours of operation. They choose this time because there’s only a very slim chance that they might be seen due to the fact that most people are likely to be sound asleep. But there are times when burglars make their move during daytime when nobody is home.

The following are advisory measures that should be taken into strict considerations to prevent imminent burglaries.

  • Know Your Surroundings

Trees, Bushes and tall grasses in your surroundings are totally disadvantageous to you, especially in your backyard or close to your windows. This makes the burglar’s job easier and yours harder because they commonly use them for cover. It will be advantageous to you to cut down anything that blocks your view.

  • Think Like a Burglar

One of the most important strategies to defeating an opponent is to think like that opponent. Look for all possible weakness and security breach your home might possess before a burglar finds it. Effect immediate changes to all noticed Security breach and weaknesses your home possesses because “A Stitch in Time, Saves Nine”, so avoid Procrastination to this effect.

  • Create a Security Checklist

A security checklist contains all the necessary safety measures you are obligated to perform before leaving your home or going to bed. This list should include a reminder to lock all the doors, close all the windows, leave some lights on etc. A lot of people have loads of things going through their mind at certain intervals during the day and even at night, which is why they tend to forget most of these basic security measures.

Keep Your Valuables Strategically

More often than not, burglary is a crime of opportunity. This means thieves won’t think of robbing you if they can’t find something to rob so it is advisable to keep your valuables in a place where outsiders can’t see them. This is important in robbery and burglary prevention that you don’t attract these criminals because they are very good observers and they often approach houses in a variety of familiar disguise.

Keep an Extra Eye Out

It is advisable to always be on the look-out for strangers lurking around and about your neighborhood. They may be innocent people looking for relatives or friends but robbery and burglary prevention manuals say it’s better to err on the safe side. Call the appropriate authorities and report these strangers to them so their identities can be verified.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

This is one of the oldest yet most logical quotes in life. The backwash of a burglary is known to possess so many negativisms that are capable of causing extensive medical and psychological damages to the once happy life of a victim. It is better to prevent a crime from happening by taking the necessary security measures against it than to face life through the aftermath of the crime.

People often make the mistake of thinking that their homes can’t be broken into or they can’t be stolen from. As unreasonable as this sound, it is strongly suggested that you take the time to look at affordable security steel doors on and fortify your home today because if it has happened to one, it can happen to all.

The Benefits of installing a Steel Door

12 Feb
February 12, 2014

When picturing a luxurious home or holiday you probably don’t consider the doorways however next time you’re a guest in a prestigious hotel or staying in a private mansion take a look at the doors.

You’ll find there’s much more than meets the eye.

Most modern hotels of 4stars plus now have the added luxury of a steel door for their rooms. Even if this extra isn’t available for every guest it’s almost certain it will be for those staying in the upper decks, suites or honeymoon rooms.

It’s so common these days that you probably take it for granted, noting only the weight of the hotel room door as one of you holds it open while the other fetches the luggage. You’ll be all too familiar with the scene where you fumble with a key card as you precariously balance your bags, slotting it into the wall so you can benefit from some light.

You’ll also remember times when you or a family member has popped outside for a second only to be left stranded without your key as the door closes swiftly behind leaving you locked out of the room.

These may seem like slight annoyances yet the steel doors of hotels give back so much more so these small facts can be ignored.

Why Does Steel Suggest Luxury?

We all know the expression that first impressions count, and the entrance to your hotel room is no different. Immediately, before you’ve even unlocked the door you are rewarded with a sense of safety and security.

Step Inside

Once inside, with the steel door as your boundary you can be confident your privacy is protected as no one can simply drop in without a key.

Sleep Soundly

Steel doors, although revered for security are also incredible at soundproofing a room so once you’re inside you can talk without being overheard and sleep soundly without the noisy hen party across the hall waking you up!

Fight Fire

Capable of resisting extreme temperatures, the steel door is ideal for keeping you safe in the event of a fire. In a hotel fitted with high quality steel doors, even if the hall outside is on fire, you’re unlikely to experience the heat or the smoke through the door. Of course following procedure and getting out of the building altogether is the key but this does provide extra peace of mind.

Don’t be a Hero

Nobody wants to be in a siege situation like in the popular series of 24 but it’s nice to know that if the hotel was ever under attack you wouldn’t have to adopt Jack Bauer’s bravery as the steel door will keep you safe.

The door will ensure no tools, bullets, weapons or flames penetrate making your hotel room the sanctuary you deserve it to be, no matter what happens on the outside.

It certainly shows why steel doors are now common procedure for new hotel builds or refurbishments as they add the extra luxury, privacy and security that every holidaymaker deserves.

Your Door versus a Stylish Steel Door Covered in Luxury Wood

A door is an important part of the house you cannot afford to ignore. The door is usually a gateway into your home and is therefore the pillar of your home security. Some people tend to over concentrate on the beauty of a door and forget crucial security fundamentals that should exist on any door. The cases of London burglary have gone high and therefore home owners need to pay more attention to the type of doors they are using for their homes. Recent cases have shown quite a number of London suburbs are experiencing burglaries even during the day, this brings into focus the need for home owners to choose the right types of doors.

Your house has important valuables you have spent a lot of money purchasing. Getting the right type of door that allows you to leave your home without having to worry about security issues is a wise decision. Wooden doors are very common but what many don’t know is they are very easy to break into. Quite a number of households have suffered from cases of burglary because of lack of strong doors that have enhanced security capabilities to keep thieves out of the house.

The good news is that it is possible to have both style and security incorporated into your door. As much as it is good to have stylish doors, you need to make sure that they come with extra security enforcement that makes it difficult for unauthorised access. With the high rate of home break-ins in London, several London burglary companies have been set up to offer help to clients and advice on the best way to keep a home safe.

Nowadays, steel doors have emerged as the clear favourites especially for countering cases of burglary. These doors come with enhanced security features such as steel bolts that make it very difficult for thieves to penetrate. If you have an ordinary door that you feel is not strong enough to provide adequate security, you need to find a company that deals with door replacement services. Here, you can either choose to have your door reinforced with advanced security features or have your door completely removed and replaced with a new one. You should know that wooden doors have limited security provisions and therefore make it quite simple for a burglary to take place.

Having a secure door does not mean you should opt for ugly looking doors. There are many stylish doors which come in various designs that clients can choose from. It’s time for those neighbourhoods experiencing burglaries to step up and acquire secure doors that allow one to have a peace of mind. With proper internet research, it is quite easy to find a variety of London burglary companies.

Once again you can clearly see how pathetic a wooden door is when it comes to a burglar, take the first step get a TITAN security door fitted ASAP, visit our website o see our burglary gallery–>

Surprise your burglar with a Titan Steel Door

September 23, 2013

You are likely to have more important things on your mind than considering changing your front door entrance, after all it’s done its job for well over ten years, but unfortunately the times are changing as more and more households are experiencing burglaries.

The Facts

While the UK is still in the grip of a recession the number of crimes has increased to 85 homes being broken into each hour.  The British Crime Survey highlights these alarming figures and reported that over 745,000 properties were the target of crime in 2011.  It is also suggested that these figures will only get worse due to the police budget cuts.

These are certainly worrying statistics but you do not need to be a part of this?  You can do something about it today.

Your security

A burglar has lots of experience in breaking in; it’s their day job after all.  So no matter how many locks you have on your door and the quality of these locks may be the best, it can still be forced open as every standard wooden or PVC door has a weak point.

In the back of your mind you probably know that a wooden door and frame is no longer strong enough to withstand a forced entry.

ASL is very proud to offer its customers a solution as they take the security of their customers very seriously.  Our range of Titan steel doors means you can go on holiday, see friends and family and sleep at night with the peace of mind that your Titan steel door will do the job.

But who wants the look of a steel front door; after all it’s not very attractive and may give false opinions of you being over cautious.  This why all our steel doors are covered in a wood of your choice.  With a huge range of woods available including antique oak and mahogany you will have a front door that matches the rest of your exterior.  Plus the burglar would not even know it is a steel door until they try and break in!

A steel door with a wooden covering can prevent facing the aftermath of a burglary

Did you know that most burglaries happen between the hours of 11am and 4pm?  Yes that’s right, in the day rather than at night time when most people expect burglaries to happen.  A typical burglar will tend to knock the door to see if anyone answers and also likely to ask a random person if anyone is in.

If it is highly unlikely that no one is home they will look for the weak point in the door using a screwdriver or crowbar to enable them to pry the door open just enough that a good kick will force the door to give way.

Your burglar will be in for a surprise when they are welcomed by your steel door.  With its 18 hard steel bolts these doors provide optimum security and strength.

Raise your game and do not become a victim of a very personal crime that can leave you feeling vulnerable.

A dog may be a man’s best friend but will Alfie keep your home secure?

03 Sep
September 3, 2013

I don’t suspect there is any danger of a dog losing its reputation as “man’s best friend” but most certainly the latest design of panic rooms for homes in London are giving Alfie the dog a run for his money.

Unfortunately even though a dog may be able to deter the postman from putting his hand through your letter box when delivering the post, they cannot provide 24/7 surveillance and keep you and your family members safe if an intruder was to get into your home.

Did you know that according to the latest Metropolitan Police crime figures, London alone has unfortunately had 27,209 burglaries in the period April to July 2013?  This may be a slight decrease of 8.1% from the same period last year but it is still a large number to consider for only four months.

There is a variety of home security systems available, many with multiple motion sensors, CCTV cameras and secure passwords providing limited protection when they are both in and away from home but a titan steel security door is guaranteed to keep you safe.

There are many studies that highlight the large number of advantages available to the average householder in installing a steel security door.  The main and most obvious is there is an enormous reduction in a potential burglary.  Homeowners in London that have a fully functioning security door or panic room are 300 times less likely to experience a break-in or suffer injury in comparison with a neighbour who does not have any security in place.

When you think about the word “panic room” you are very likely to think about the film which stared Jodie Foster in 2002 where she hides in her Manhattan town home.  Within her room she has a number of supplies to keep her safe and secure.

This however is the dramatic and exciting end of a panic room and they are not usually as dangerous as implied in the film.  These panic room or security doors which are a little less dramatic trace back much further than any Jodie Foster film.  In the medieval times they were used to protect feudal lords.

So how does the average panic room/security door work?

Many people assume that having an extra bolt on their door is going to keep them secure but unfortunately the most experienced of intruders can find ways to make their way into your home which is why it is understanding that many people choose to have a security door instead.  There are 18 hard-steel bolts around the edges of the door to ensure when locked it is completely secure.

You can turn any room in the house into a panic room, such as a study, a bedroom or even a bathroom.  It is always worth having a Plan B if an intruder was unfortunately going to get into your home.

Don’t become a part of this statistic; protect your family today with titan steel security doors….

The Best Family Guard Dogs

21 Aug
August 21, 2013

A few weeks ago we shared a shocking statistic that showed single parent families are those most likely to be targeted by burglars. Of course, we strongly recommend an impenetrable security steel door to keep the family safe, however a family pet can also help with deterring burglars.

If you have the time, a dog can not only protect you and your family but it can become a wonderful pet that adds value to your home. Despite popular belief, you don’t have to choose a pet such as a Rottweiler or a Bull Mastiff, there are plenty of breeds that are completely safe for children but will protect the family against strangers.

When choosing a dog for security you have many options. There are guard dogs to suit every family situation.

Here’s what to consider:

A guard dog doesn’t have to be huge and fierce to scare off a burglar. In fact a terrier is often the pet of choice for many as it will bark incessantly when there’s a threat of intrusion. This barking alone is enough to deter an opportunist thief as it alerts you and neighbours to their presence.

A huge dog can make you feel safer while being a deterrent to burglars on sight alone. There are many breeds that grow large yet are soft with their families and fierce with strangers. Examples of breeds include the Labradoodle, very playful, adores children yet will protect in an instant. The Saint Bernard will deter any intruder will a single growl while being a wonderful albeit large and drooling playmate for kids, while the Great Dane will take up a lot of space, remind children of Scooby Doo, but keep intruders away.

The size also depends on the amount of space you have, it’s not fair to have a very large dog if you live in a flat without a garden. Smaller breeds will not mind the absence of a garden as long as they are walked twice a day.

Some people will invest in a guard dog only to lock it away in the utility room or kitchen for the night, every night. Of course, this is where many dogs sleep however a burglar will not feel threatened by a dog that is safely stored away. Consider where the dog should sleep. Near the front or back door is optimum. Although some people think guard dogs should be kept outside, protective instincts are enhanced if the dog feels like a complete part of the family.

A dog does need time and training. Leaving it all day as you go out to work can be cruel unless you have neighbours or a support network to help. However, if you are a single parent, you may find that the dog keeps you company and becomes your best friend too. Think about the commitment first, as you may need someone else to take care of the dog if you’re away.

A large dog will need a lot of exercise, some need to walk or run miles every day.

A puppy can be an ideal choice as with training they soon grow into an adult that becomes a protector of the family, however if you have little training experience or you’d prefer a dog to guard the home right now you can find many retired gun dogs and unwanted animals at various shelters.

Staying Secure on Holiday

13 Aug
August 13, 2013

As the summer holidays are here, many are choosing this time to go away for a week or two in order to keep the children entertained. Family homes are considered to be the most profitable for a burglar, and they’re also an easy target if they’re empty.

A security steel door will ensure they can’t access your home through the entrance, however we’ve put together some tips that ensure the burglar moves along realising an attempt is not worth the risk.

It’s Not Rubbish

Your wheelie bin tells a burglar a thousand stories. Thieves will scour the area on collection days and if they notice a bin hasn’t been put out, they will earmark that property as empty. They will then make further investigations.

If you are going on holiday ask a neighbour to put your bin out, even if it’s empty. If you haven’t any neighbours, just leave it where it can be seen from the road.

Your Post

You may have already cancelled the milk and newspaper deliveries for when you’re away, however you can’t cancel the postman. A pile of post or letters sticking out of the door are indicators that your property is empty. Make sure you have a letter box that has brushes on the inside. It should have a strong hinge so it clasps shut without being forced. This ensures that a burglar can’t see through to the pile of post while the postman must make sure letters go all the way through.

Although attractive, resist the urge to have a post-box on the exterior walls. These fill up quickly and can be accessed very easily.

Your Garden

Your garden is your welcome or deterrent to a potential burglar. Privacy is sought after by many yet hedges exceeding windowsill height give burglars a great screen in which to hide as they gain access to your house. Take a new look at your garden. Make sure sheds are secure, add padlocks on the inside to gates, add pointy deterrents to the top of fences, and invest in climbing thorny plants like roses to deter burglars from climbing to flat roofs to gain access.

You can also use a timer switch to set a sprinkler daily. This is one of the best deterrents there is. If you are away for a while, ask someone to cut your grass, so it looks as though you’re maintaining your home.

Your Valuables

Simple measures such as timer switches for lights or making sure window locks are visible can be enough of a deterrent. However, if you have a 50” LED screen staring the burglar in the face they may think the reward outweighs the risk. Expensive items on display are tempting burglars to enter so put them away somewhere safe. You can put them in the loft or out of sight of the windows or you can turn one room into an impenetrable safe with a security steel door.

A Little Help from Your Friends

The best way to deter burglars while you’re on holiday is to have a friend or neighbour regularly check in on the house. Neighbourhood Watch has changed in recent years and can be an ideal solution as friends will put out your rubbish, collet post and mow the lawn in return for the same favour.

Just a few little changes can ensure you’re not a victim of burglary as nothing spoils a great holiday than coming back to an empty home.

Shocking Statistics that Make Us Sick

02 Aug
August 2, 2013

No matter how long we’ve been in this industry we still feel shocked by how often burglaries occur. From opportunists to careful planners, this crime has a community all of its own and impacts on thousands of victims, emotionally and financially every year.

Recently Tesco released this info graphic that shows the shocking statistics behind burglaries in the UK. Compounding our worst fears that despite raising awareness, the figures don’t seem to be going down.

From these statistics we’ve picked out a few that we believe we can help with here at Steel Security Doors, either through products and services or simple free advice.

1.     73% of burglars use the front door

Unfortunately we’ve seen this with our own eyes. See our gallery here. Burglars are becoming more and more sophisticated using a wide range of tools that make short work of the typical door.

This is the main motivation behind installing a steel door as although from the outside it looks normal, nothing will ever penetrate it. With a steel door, you’ll decrease your chances of being burgled by 73%.

2.     You are 6 times more likely to be burgled without dead locks on exterior doors and windows

Burglars don’t see a mortis or Yale lock as a challenge anymore. Disturbingly there are even YouTube videos that give tutorials on how to bypass these locks. More secure solutions are needed to keep the burglar out. Our steel doors lock from the top to the bottom using impenetrable indestructible locks, so unless your burglar has a key, they’re not getting in.

3.     You are 3 times more likely to be burgled if you have children

This statistic sickens us the most. Maybe it’s due to the extra items in the house, or that generally if you have children your house is larger. It could also mean you’re less likely to put up a fight. When combined with the other statistic that 57% of burglaries are committed when someone is at home, this understandably worries parents senseless.

Our steel doors can also be used inside the home, to make panic rooms. They’re becoming more and more popular as people feel they need somewhere safe to put the children should the worst happen. They can also be used to store the most valuable items too.

4.     56% of burglaries happen at night

This surprises many of our clients as many believe the figure to be much higher. Despite the statistics showing otherwise few people protect their home adequately during the day as they think a burglar will be put off by the visibility.

In fact burglars will strike when people are at work as they are less likely to be seen and any noise they make is less likely to be viewed as suspicious. We recommend timers for lights and the TV or radio. A good alarm system and a friendly neighbour that is home during the day to combat this.

Above all prevention is better than the cure!

Ten Ways to Get Over a Burglary

23 Jul
July 23, 2013

Having your home burgled is a traumatic time one that no one truly understands unless they’ve been through it. Although the material loss is evident there are other consequences which can impact on the simple enjoyment of everyday life.

Here are some tips that have been shared by others who have been burgled along with psychologists and councillors to help you move on and forget about the people that invaded your home.

  1. Add Security – The most common feeling after a burglary is fear. Usually we’ve enjoyed our lives up until this point feeling completely secure in our homes, yet a break in reminds us just how vulnerable we are. Add extra security, replace your locks and doors and make sure no burglar could penetrate your home again.
  2. Add Privacy – Another feeling we experience is the invasion of privacy as we realise that unless it was an opportunist, the burglary took planning. This means the criminals could have watched our routine to determine the best times to strike. Add privacy, add blinds, shake it up with timers that turn your lights on and off unpredictably. Make a garden fence higher or turn glass doors into solid ones.
  3. Replace Items Left Behind – If you are insured, you will no doubt be replacing items that were stolen however it can be advantageous to replace some left behind too. You may have items that have endured fingerprinting being forever etched in your mind as a reminder of the event. You may feel uncomfortable that they saw your underwear, in which case replace it.
  4. Replace Stolen Items with Something Different – Items that are regularly stolen include electrical goods and jewellery. It may sound harsh but you will never be able to replace any memories stolen so don’t try. Update your items, buy something new, treat yourself to a necklace you’ve had your eye on.
  5. Redecorate – Sometimes all it takes to change the atmosphere of a home is a lick of paint and some rearranging of furniture. Try it and see if you can’t make it a fresh start.
  6. Accept Help – Police will offer you victim support for a reason, as you are a victim of crime. Connecting with people who understand your situation can be the first step towards moving on.
  7. Take Action – Often victims of a burglary feel powerless as they’ve not been able to do anything to prevent the crime. Although justice is best left to the police you can become an active member of your community by starting a neighbourhood watch scheme to prevent other burglaries in the future.
  8. Talk – It’s not surprising that a burglary can be a trigger for OCD. Victims feel they need to check locks many times or do certain things in order to prevent the same happening again. This is why it’s essential to talk. Let your family know how you feel, talk to a councillor or just to a friend so you have an outlet.
  9. Share- Sharing is often the best way to get over something and although initially you may not want to relive the experience, in time you could help others by sharing. You can let others know how the burglar got in (so they can assess their own security), steps you’ve taken since, what helped you cope and even details about how good your insurance company was. If any good at all can come out of this situation, you’ll feel like you’re regaining control.
  10. Move House- This may seem extreme but sometimes it is the only way. No matter what measures people take they simply can’t erase the memory. Moving house will not only give you a fresh start it also occupies the mind with positive thoughts as you become busy with arrangements.

If you’re ready to share your story, we’d love to hear from you so we can help our customers overcome burglary too.
