10 Downing Street is the headquarters of Her Majesty’s Government and the official residence and office of the First Lord of the Treasury, an office now invariably held by the Prime Minister.

Situated on Downing Street in the City of Westminster, London, Number 10 is one of the most famous addresses in the United Kingdom and the world.

Most of the modern exterior shape and features of Number 10 were created by Kent when he combined the house at the back with the Downing Street townhouses in 1735. Its outside appearance is basically the same today as it was when he completed his work. An exception is the now famous front door entrance.

Number 10′s famous door is the product of the renovations Townsend ordered in 1766; it was probably not completed until 1772. Executed in the Georgian style by the architect Kenton Couse, it is unassuming and narrow, consisting of a single white stone step leading to a modest brick front. The small, six-panelled door, originally made of black oak, is surrounded by cream-coloured casing and adorned with a semicircular fanlight window. Painted in white, between the top and middle sets of panels, is the number “10″. The zero of the number “10″ is set at a slight angle as a nod to the original number which had a badly fixed zero. A black iron knocker in the shape of a lion’s head is between the two middle panels; below the knocker is a brass letter box with the inscription “First Lord of the Treasury”. A black ironwork fence with spiked newel posts runs along the front of the house and up each side of the step to the door. The fence rises above the step into a double-swirled archway, supporting an iron gas lamp surmounted by a crown.

After the IRA mortar attack in 1991, the original black oak door was replaced by a blast-proof steel one. Regularly removed for refurbishment and replaced with a replica, it is so heavy that it takes eight men to lift it. The brass letterbox still bears the legend “First Lord of the Treasury”. The original door was put on display in the Churchill Museum at the Cabinet War Rooms.

Received a call at 23:30 PM A young lady just returned home to find her door was forced open, and yes she was burgled. Not a good situation to find yourself in, but as you know by reading my blog there is something that can be done. Remember this  if this young lady  had a TITAN security door fitted the outcome would have been totally different.

Yet another burglary in London through the main entrance door of the apartment. This is the basic door most people have to secure  there home. Take a very good look at what’s happened the most important thing to think about is the British standard deadlock fitted to the door. Once the hole has been cut out to insert the lock you only have about a quarter of an inch of wood either side, that’s all!!!!  you can clearly see the way it was ripped off as there was really nothing apart from the two screws holding the lock to the door, and your local burglar knows that in fact it was a complete waste of time of the occupier even locking the door. The burglar used an axe to open the door

Here at ASL we like to inform  when possible situations that are occurring in London.  This particular situation absolutely petrified the occupier, he has called as in today to get our titan steel security doors installed.

The reason for this is he was at home during the afternoon when he heard  pounding on he’s double doors he looked out of the window and could see two men forcing open he’s main entrance door, he managed to call the police and I believe the two men were arrested, it turned out they were from Eastern Europe and were on drugs the very thought that they could have easily opened his door was very concerning and he decided to get us in.

I’ve just had an update from site from our carpenter the situation was this 24 Apartments 4 apartment were broken into the adjoining flats were in but did not hear anything THE doors had good quality locks but the wooden door and door frames were not strong enough in this day and age they need to be made out of steel visit

If you live in one of the many converted properties in London you should be aware how un-secure these properties are.   Although I’ve told you many many times that these are the favourites for burglars, as the main entrance door is normally fitted with an intercom system which is very very easy to be forced open after ringing all the doorbells if there is no reply, in they go. Hello everybody the month of May has been extremely busy here at ASL . Unfortunately lots of burglaries I can only put a small selection on this blog, but I can’t see any other way of the general public being informed and updated regarding burglaries in London.

Everybody believes it’s  going to happen to somebody else. But with so many burglaries who is this somebody else. It can be any of us at any time. Of course you lock your door with your standard deadlock and rim lock and I’m sure you believe that this is sufficient to keep these people out. After all why would the insurance companies not insure you if you did not have a British standard  deadlock fitted to the main door of your home. Surely they know by you having this lock it must be something very special to keep these people out, when the truth be that it’s really no protection whatsoever. If you have a soft wood door. They seem to have forgotten this expect of the scenario. Although I suppose it would be a little bit difficult for them to want you to change your door.

Hello and welcome to my blog,

Burglars have been busy over the bank holiday weekend

I’m pleased to say that we fitted, one of our Titan steel security doors to a premises in Park Royal , London nw10 a few years ago, after the occupier had a burglary. The door has been securing the premises ever since. But this bank holiday weekend as you can see by this dramatic picture it was attacked. They tried everything to gain entry but eventually they gave up which we have found is the normal scenario. If it was a wooden door and wooden frame. The outcome would have been totally different. instead of our customer contacting us today explaining he has had an attempted burglary it would have been, I’ve been burgled and all my belongings are gone. Now the situation for him is not so bad, the building insurance will replace the door on a like-for-like basis with no charge for our customer. We are now  manufacturing a new door.

Yet another devastating arrival home, I know I keep on and on about wooden doors and door frames being in most cases impossible to keep these burglars out. This is a clear example once again. What Should You Do If You Have Been Burgled?
 
It is very distressing to find out that your home has been broken into. But there are people that can help you and you should get in touch with them as soon as possible.

Here is a list of some of the things that you should do if you discover that you have been burgled:

Straight away:

•Phone the police. Call 999 if you think that the burglars are still in the area.  Be careful. Don’t go into your house if you think burglars are still there. Call the police and wait in a safe place for them to arrive.
•Don’t tidy up. There may be evidence that the police can use to catch whoever broke into your house. Try not to touch anything until the police have arrived and checked your home over- you might destroy useful evidence.
After the police have visited:

•Secure your home. Once the police have checked your home for evidence, they will give you advice on securing your home. You might need to repair your door, windows and/or locks. Telephone your landlord and let them know what has happened if you rent your home.
•Cancel your credit cards, chequebooks, etc. You will need to contact your bank or building society immediately if any credit cards, bankcards or chequebooks have been stolen to cancel them. You will also need to contact the pension or benefits agency if your pension or benefits book are missing. You will also need to contact the Home Office’s Identity and Passport Service if your passport is stolen the DVLA to report that your driving licence has been stolen.

I was reading an article In a national newspaper Stating that burglaries Last year what up by 0.9%

And that A burglary is a caring at a rate of  one a  minute.

That does not surprise me at all.  Now what can be done, that is the question, do you go and get expensive locks, when you leave your home to you spend time locking two or three locks.
This has been proven to be a complete waste of time, if you view the photographs in my blog you will see what I mean.

Once again, the burglars had the upper hand, large converted Victorian house situated in the Notting Hill Gate area of London. The main communal door was fitted with an intercom system which had no security whatsoever. As if you think about it you only have to press a button to allow the door to be opened. This involves a small electrical current, releasing the mechanism on the Lock. A potential burglar is fully aware that one good run at the door, it will open, then he has got 4 Flats all empty as the occupiers were at work etc. In this case.

The doors were fitted with high security locks that were made redundant as the wooden doors and wooden doorframes could not withstand the attack.

LONDON – A man on trial for the brutal murder of two French university students in their London flat admitted on Wednesday to carrying out a burglary at the property, while still denying the murder charge.
Daniel Dano Sonnex, 23, pleaded guilty to the burglary as he appeared alongside co-defendant Nigel Farmer, 34, to face trial at the Old Bailey in London. Farmer denies any theft charges.
The two men are alleged to have repeatedly stabbed Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo, both 23, and set fire to their bodies at the students’ rented flat in the tough south London district of New Cross in June last year.
The jury was told that Sonnex had pleaded guilty to a single count of burglary which took place on the day of the murder and at the same address.
It relates to the theft of a bank card, credit card, two Sony PSP games consoles and two mobile phones.
Both defendants deny murdering the students and charges of false imprisonment and arson.
Sonnex and Farmer are alleged to have held the two victims captive at the flat before killing them and setting fire to the property.
The victims, second-year students from Clermont-Ferrand in central France, were nearing the end of a three-month research placement studying DNA at Imperial College when they were killed.
The first full day of evidence will be heard on Friday.
The victims’ parents were in court, accompanied by an interpreter.
A lawyer representing the parents said they were prepared for a harrowing trial.
The first days will be very, very, very hard because evidence will come out which in my view will be unpleasant to see, Marie-Claire Sparrow told journalists outside the court.

Recession blamed as burglaries rise

Knife crime is down 12% but the number of domestic burglaries has increased by 4%

Latest crime figures have revealed rises in the number of burglaries, personal thefts and robberies at knifepoint as the recession takes hold.

Recorded crime figures from police forces in England and Wales showed a 4% rise in domestic burglaries between October and December, while the British Crime Survey showed a 25% rise in the number of thefts.

But there was a sharp fall in the number of killings involving knives, which fell by 12%, and total recorded crime was down by 4%.

Last year a leaked draft memo from Home Secretary Jacqui Smith revealed fears inside Government of sharp rises in crime linked to the economic downturn.

Earlier this month Ms Smith launched a scheme to help improve home security with money-off vouchers for door and window locks from DIY stores.

The 4% increase in domestic burglaries – to 75,600 – is a repeat of the rise in home break-ins recorded in the third quarter. It prompted fears of a “credit crunch crime wave” linked to the rise in unemployment.

The police figures also showed a 4% increase in burglaries at business and other premises. Overall property crime was down by 4% with falls in vehicle break-ins, other thefts and criminal damage.

Police minister Vernon Coaker acknowledged the “new challenges” of burglary and other so-called acquisitive crimes.

It’s a beautiful day today, the sun is shining. I just heard on the radio that Google have launched Street view. When I got into the office I went straight to my computer and looked it up.

The first thing I thought is oh my God this is an amazing tool for the local burglars. Basically they can plan everything, they can see how many locks are on the main door to a building, they can see drainpipes along the walls of the building, entrances to ground floor apartments, escape routes, it really is going to help the burglars. MORE homes were burgled in Harrow at the start of 2009 compared with the same time last year, police have revealed.

Speaking to a meeting of the Harrow Police and Community Consultative Group, Chief Superintendent Richard Walton revealed residential burglary is up by seven per cent since Christmas, compared with the same period in 2008.

Mr Walton said: “We are facing a challenge around residential burglary, and across London there has been a dramatic increase in burglary since Christmas.

“It is following a national trend, and we are desperately trying to get it down.”

Four officers have been added to the police squad specifically tackling the problem of homes being burgled, doubling its previous capacity.

When a home is burgled, the victim and their immediate neighbours are issued with a pack with advice on avoiding being burgled, but Mr Walton said the aim is to stop the burglaries happening in the first place.

He told the meeting on Monday: “We are doing everything we can to try to stem the increase.”

When questioned, Mr Walton added there is no data a present to suggest the rise in burglary in Harrow and across the country is related to the current recession.

2:00 a.m. March 18, 2009

A man was tied up and robbed yesterday morning after he interrupted four men burglarizing his home, sheriff’s deputies said.

The man was upstairs in his house on Manchester Avenue near Birmingham Drive about 10:20 a.m. when he heard noises coming from downstairs. He confronted the men, one of whom had a handgun, sheriff’s deputies said.

The group tied up the man and stole cash, his cell phone and at least one flat-screen television before driving away

My wife and I were burgled about a year ago. We live in the Battersea area. It’s a nice area but across the railway tracks is a large housing estate. When they burgled us last year they literally kicked the outside door down, both inside doors down to the flats and turned them literally upside down. They took anything of any value and walked out the front doors (as that’s the only way out). This very evening my wife and I were watching TV in our lounge at the back of the house when we heard noises. I went to investigate to find someone climbing into our bedroom. I managed to chase this coward down a few streets but I lost him. What bothers us more than anything is that this was midnight on a Monday evening when everyone is in and still they break into your house whether your in or not. Fact is we leave this god forsaken hellhole in two weeks and we will spread the word that London is no part of England. It’s the dark spot on the UK map, somewhere where people do not care about their neighbours and care only about themselves. The amount of crime is disgusting and unacceptable, the fact is no-one will do anything about it. The British spirit is almost certainly dead.Take care out there,

3 apartments in a block of six were broken into. As per usual they just kicked the doors in.

On this occasion the burglars decided to break into a church I find this to be morally quite offensive. Normal story they forced open a wooden door. Although the door was locked. It’s not a great start for this day, but I have noticed that more and more people are purchasing our Titan steel security door, so that’s very encouraging. Once again a very busy day regarding burglaries in London. On this occasion they forced open one front door, and burglarise the house. Then they decided to break into the next-door neighbour. They managed to break the door in two pieces, but then they fled as they were disturbed. Eliminate this problem now. Get a Titan steel security door fitted.

Government ‘soft on burglars’

Almost four out of five serial burglars fail to get the minimum punishment laid down by the law, according to figures released by the Conservatives.

Only 21% of burglars convicted for a third time were jailed for the minimum statutory sentence of three years, the statistics showed.

The Tories said convicted burglars were less likely to face any prison time at all under the Labour Government, quoting Ministry of Justice figures which showed the custody rate for burglary has fallen from 45.3% in 1997 to 39.2%.

Shadow justice secretary Dominic Grieve said: “Under Labour, most burglars escape jail, and even the most prolific offenders avoid the minimum sentence. If this wasn’t bad enough, ministers have released 4,000 burglars early because they failed to provide sufficient prison capacity.”

He spoke after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith hosted a summit to address rising burglaries while insisting that the recession does not mean a rise in the offence is inevitable.

But Mr Grieve added: “There is little point in Jacqui Smith hosting summits, while Jack Straw continues to give burglars a break.”

I’ve just now receive this information the description is. (Just had a break-in the plaster has come away from the wall and the front door next to it will not close properly) This is actually in a block of flats, in the middle of the afternoon. I’ve just had an enquiry regarding our Titan steel door, the person wants to remain anonymous, and we respect her decision. On Monday  two of her neighbours were broken into and she sent as a description by e-mail today of what happened

I appreciate why you’re asking, but advertising the ease with which it happened makes me feel very vulnerable, I don’t want to give every low-life with access to the internet any ideas!…….  …..it’s a TW7 postcode and it happened on Monday evening, between approximately 6pm and 9pm. Two flats on the third floor were entered, both while the owners were out. We don’t know how they gained access to the block.

In both cases the front doors of the flats were forced, apparently with something like a crowbar, and considerable external damage was done. I don’t know what was taken, probably portable and easily disposable stuff like TVs, DVD players, jewellery………

Hello again,

Just had a telephone conversation. The lady in question was obviously upset after her door was forced open and she had a burglary. She explained that she contacted her insurance company, they said she should go out and find two estimates, wish they would approve one of them, to carry out the necessary work to replace the broken door and doorframe. I explained straightaway, that she should go back to her insurance company, and explaining she is not prepared, after being burgled to now look for two companies, they then said okay let ASL carry out the work straightaway today.

I find the telephone manner of the person calling the insurance company to be ever so important,  the more firm you are insisting you want your place secured immediately, the more likely they will say go ahead and have it done, if you show any signs of  hesitation, nervousness, they will more than likely make it extremely difficult for you and it will go on for quite a considerable amount of time.
Remember you pay your premium every month, the day you require something as important as a replacement door, doorframe, you must insist that nothing will delay you from securing your home.

Even on Valentine’s Day,

Another door broken into, the occupiers thought they were perfectly safe, they locked up and were away for a few days, only to come back on Valentine’s Day to find that they had a burglary. I really can’t understand the mentality, of other human beings, going out to cause so much heart ach. The shock of a burglary, can be truly overwhelming, these so-called human beings, wouldn’t want somebody to burgle them, they would be angry, upset, but they are willing to cause so much stress to other people, it really beggars belief, I truly believe the punishment, should be more severe a minimum of 10 years in prison would do me, for starters. Another 2 apartments broken into today. Once again they opened the main entrance door to a Victorian house which was divided into four apartments, they forced open to doors, causing considerable damage. Again the locks and doors could not withstand the force that was used. Of course, the news from Brussels that the percentage of British households burgled is twice the EU average will come as little surprise to the 733,000 people who suffered the heartbreak of having their homes violated. But what may shock them is how the police handle this particularly nasty (and, it seems, peculiarly British) crime.

In London, they have a new policy they call “sole response”. It means that in three quarters of London boroughs, the Metropolitan Police send an officer to a burglary only if the criminal is still in the house. Instead, a nonpolice crime scene examiner calls later to look for evidence. The rest of the capital will adopt sole response this year with many other forces across the country.

My burglary experience.

“I came home late one night to find the front door to my new build flat axe butchered and lots of personal items missing. My area is normally so quiet and feels so safe that I must admit I was lulled into a false sense of security and had only single locked the door that day. Of course this came as a devastating shock to myself and my partner. The thieves came in the afternoon while we were at work. They somehow managed to get buzzed into the block, prised the door open with a crowbar or similar tool and achieved this by critically damaging the wooden door in the area where the locks are and smashing the frame. The police crime prevention officers inspected the damaged door and said that even if I had double locked the door the thieves would still have been able to get in, only it would have taken longer. Nobody heard or saw anything. It was a difficult experience and nothing can prepare you for the dread that one feels and the ‘what if’ scenarios that go through the mind. It’s not so much the lost personal items, as these can often be replaced by home insurance, but even after the initial shock anger and self pity subsides, an incident like this instils a lingering sense of worry and fear that the place where your family lives is not secure enough and that unless you take effective action, the burglars might even return.

I can safely say that once the titan door was installed, all these fears evaporated and my partner and I are finally free again to get on with life without fear of coming home one day to face a repeat of last summer’s nightmare. I’m continuing, as promised to insert a small selection of burglaries that I receive at the ASL office every day.
This is a typical situation, where the owner came back from a hard day at work to find that hes apartment door was open, and that he had been burgled. Most insurance company require, that a British standard five lever deadlock be fitted to your main door. As you can see there was a five lever British standard deadlock fitted to this apartment door, which proved to be absolutely useless, as you can clearly see. Once a carpenter has to remove, a significant part of the door, to enable him to install this lock, there is hardly any wood either side, connecting the lock to the door. In fact the owner was really wasting his time locking the door. Something needs to be done, there is something you can do, please visit ASL Steel Security Doors.
